When using the Internet, it is important that you are safe. Below are some tips to remember when surfing the web.
Internet Safety Tips:
- Never give out personal information such as your address, telephone number, parents’ work address/telephone number without your parents’ permission.
- Tell your parents, or a trusted adult, right away if you come across something that makes you feel uncomfortable.
- Never agree to meet with someone you’ve met online without first checking with your parents. If your parents do agree to the meeting, be sure that it is in a public place and that you bring a parent along.
- Talk to you parents about posting pictures of yourself or others online and never post pictures that your parents consider to be inappropriate.
- Do NOT respond to any messages that are mean or that make you feel uncomfortable. Remember, it is NEVER your fault if you get a message like that. If you receive a message that is mean or makes you feel uncomfortable, tell your parents or a trusted adult right away.
- Talk with your parents about setting rules for going online and using a mobile device. With your parents, decide on a time of day that you can be online, the length of time you can be online, and the websites that you are allowed to visit. NEVER break these rules that your parents or adults have made for you.
- Do NOT give out your passwords to anyone other than your parents – this even includes your best friends.
- Check with your parents before downloading or installing software or doing anything that could possibly hurt your computer, mobile device, or jeopardize your family’s privacy.
- Be a good online citizen and do NOT do anything that hurts other people or is against the law.
- Help your parents understand how to have fun and learn things online by teaching them things about the Internet, computers, and other technology.
In addition to protecting yourself, when using the Internet, it is also important to understand how to use email safely. When using email follow the tips listed below.
Email safety tips:
- Never share your email password with anyone other than your parents – this even includes your best friends.
- Be very selective in who has access to your email account.
- Never open unfamiliar emails.
- If you forward an email be sure that it does NOT contain personal information about yourself or others.
- If something seems inappropriate in your email, make sure you tell your parents or a trusted adult immediately.
